While searching for new materials for your jewelry projects, you may have come across pearls that are flatter in appearance than traditional pearls. These pearls also come in a variety of colors. These are called Keshi pearls, and they are very rare. They are found only in the Japanese Akoya Oyster, which is found in the Sea of Japan.

Keshi is the Japanese word for “poppy,” and these pearls are often called poppy seed pearls. Keshi pearls are not usually round. In fact, to find a round one is extremely rare. They are typically flat because, during the culturing process, the oyster rejects the pearl and spits out the nucleus before pearl has been completely formed. This means that the result is a pearl that is 100% nacre (mother-of-pearl). This gives the Keshi pearl a high level of luster and shimmer.

A Keshi pearl can take seven years to form. A few strands of Keshi pearls in a matching color may take 10 years to create. Keshi pearls care becoming more and more rare – and, as a result, more expensive – because pearl farms have started the practice of x-raying the oysters to see if the nucleus has been expelled. If so, the oysters are re-nucleated so that a Keshi pearl cannot form.

Due to their various colors and shapes, Keshi pearls make beautiful jewelry. They can be worn any time of the year. Their coloring works well for winter clothing, yet their shape makes them look like shells, making them great for wearing on a beach vacation or in the summer. If you’re looking to incorporate Keshi pearls into your jewelry designs, here are some tutorials and ideas to help you get started.
  1. Keshi Pearl Necklace and Earrings: Follow this tutorial to create a stunning 17-inch necklace and matching earrings. These pieces use solely Keshi pearls and accessories. No other types of pearls or gems are used, as any other embellishments could detract from the pearls’ natural beauty. Keshi pearls are easier to string from end to end rather than trying to center them.
  2. For a more elegant look, look for Keshi pearls that are more rounded in shape. Although you won’t find any that are completely round, pearls that are rounded – rather than flat – look more like traditional white pearls and offer a touch of elegance.
  3. For extra sparkle, add Swarovski crystals to your Keshi pearl jewelry creations. You don’t want to go overboard – the Keshi pearls should act as the focal point of your jewelry piece – but a few medium-sized crystals strung in various places on your bracelet or necklace will add some extra sparkle and elegance.
  4. Keshi pearls that have a green or brownish tint to them work well with copper wires. Consider making dangling earrings using large Keshi You just need two pearls – one for each ear – as well as some copper wire and a large copper piece for the top of the earring. There are many types of copper beads to consider, so the sky’s the limit.
  5. You can also use Keshi pearls for non-jewelry uses. You can use them to dress up a pair of plain white tights. For fancy footwear, consider adding them to an ordinary pair of sandals. You can use them along the sides, for example, or to create a pattern. You can also use them in craft projects around the home to create an elegant atmosphere. For example, you can adorn them to candle holders or picture frames to add an element of sophistication.

Buying Tips

Keshi pearls are the most expensive pearls around. Beware of cheap imitations. Many fake Keshi beads – made from plastic or covered in lacquer – are available on auction sites. Real Keshi pearls are bought directly from pearl farms. Look for reputable sellers and check out reviews before purchasing. This is especially important if you plan to sell your jewelry creations since you don’t want to sell your customers jewelry made from fake pearls.

Because they are created through biological processes, no two Keshi pearls are exactly the same. They are not man-made gems that can be created to look identical. Each has its own unique coloring, shape, and design. This means that each piece of jewelry you create – whether earrings, bracelets, rings, earrings, or anything else – will be one of a kind.
