Sillimanite Beads

Sillimanite beads are one of three alumino-silicate polymorphs, the other two being andalusite and kyanite. Polymorphs are minerals that have the same chemical formula but differ in crystal structure and physical properties. Named after Benjamin Silliman, the founder of the American Journal of Science and Professor of Chemistry and Geology at Yale University. The colors range from Sapphire blue, blue-green, colorless, white, gray, yellowish, brownish, greenish, bluish, to violet-blue. Sillimanite can be transparent to translucent in quality and can have a Cat`s Eye effect. Mine locations are Vltava (Moldau), Sušice (Schüttenhofen), Plze Region, Bohemia (Böhmen; Boehmen), Czech Republic Chester, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA and India.
