Idocrase Beads

Idocrase beads are gems with a wide range of physical properties which offers many color variations such as Olive green, gray, white, yellowish brown, yellow brown and pale blue. The most common Idocrase seen are the olive green or yellowish brown hues that have a waxy or greasy luster. The gemstone may have vivid green chromium inclusions and will be transparent to opaque in quality. The name comes from the greek `Eidos` meaning form and `krasis` meaning mix. The gemstone was first mined at Mt. Vesuvius, Italy which resulted in the additional name of Vesuvianite. Today, the stone is mined in Brazil, Mexico, Africa, Cyprus, USA (NY), Sri Lanka, Italy, Norway, Romania, and Switzerland.
